India’s Ministry of Power has informed Parliament that Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers are expected to add 26.3 gigawatts (GW) of electricity demand by 2031–32. The sharp rise reflects the country’s growing digital economy and rapid adoption of AI technologies. The increase in power demand will be driven by expanding cloud services, enterprise digitalization, high-performance computing, and the growing need for AI infrastructure. As businesses and industries adopt advanced technologies, the number and capacity of data centers are expected to grow significantly. To meet future demand, the government plans to strengthen the national power grid and encourage investment in dedicated energy infrastructure. Officials are also focusing on improving transmission networks and supporting reliable electricity supply for large-scale data centers. Industry experts believe India has the potential to become a major global hub for AI and digital infrastructure. However, they stress that expanding clean energy sources and modernizing the power sector will be essential to support long-term growth. The projected increase in electricity demand highlights the rapid expansion of India’s technology sector and the important role AI will play in driving economic growth, digital innovation, and future infrastructure development.
